For looks, I’d certainly award this kettle 5 stars but I wanted to test it out for how it performed… afterall, a kettle has one job, right? So it’s important to know just how well it does that job.So, I decided to do a comparison test: this Buckingham Stovetop whistling kettle against my trusty old copper kettle which I bought from a well known supermarket about 6 years ago.I filled each kettle in turn with 1 pint of freshly drawn cold water from my kitchen tap, positioned it in the centre of the hot (boiler) ring of my AGA* and set a timer to see how long each one would take to reach a good solid “whistling” boil. The Buckingham Stovetop whistling kettle took exactly 6 minutes to reach a steady whistle. Not bad as I’d expected it to take around 5-6 minutes.I repeated exactly the same process with my copper kettle: surprisingly it only took 3 minutes and 20 seconds to come to the same steady whistle. My copper kettle is about an inch bigger in diameter but that shouldn’t make such a marked difference in the boiling time, so I looked at the bottoms of each kettle…The bottom of the copper kettle is completely flat and machined, which means the whole base is in contact with the hotplate of my cooker. The Buckingham kettle has a shaped bottom with only a 12cm flat section in the centre. Furthermore, a straight edge (metal ruler) held up against this plate reveals a slight concave bow, meaning that in effect, there is only a thin ring around the edge of this flat section that is in contact with the cooker ring. This wouldn’t be an issue if the kettle is used on a gas hob, but on a hob which relies on maximum surface contact area, the performance is greatly reduced - as was noted in my experiment. Therefore, 2 stars were deducted as the kettle doesn’t “kettle”!The loudness of the whistle between the two kettles was also very different: at full boil, my copper kettle would drown out the noise of passing military jets, but you’d have to be in the same room to hear the whistle of the Buckingham Stovetop kettle… all very well if you live in a studio apartment with cardboard walls and are fond of a midnight cuppa!Another star was deducted from my rating; sorry, but I need my kettle to catch my attention even when I’m engrossed in a gripping episode of my favourite East End of London drama series!
It's ok. Handle does get warm so be careful and the cream colour does fade once used. The weight is nice and you can certhear the whistle.
Description very misleading barely holds 1.6lt when says 2lt kettle. Why on earth would you say 2lt kettle but can only put in 1.6lt. Not happy wanted a larger capacity kettle.
Nice really pleased
I was under the impression this was made in the UK, however upon further checking the product description states China, however it seems Buckingham England brand has offices in the UK and this may mean a certain level of expected quality and of course customer support in the event requiring warranty or resolution to an issue which gives some reassurances along with an added bonus with British brands that they won't disappear and only resort relying on the retailer, in this case Amazon to resolve. As for the kettle itself, the box shows this is for induction hob only, but then states for all types, I used this on an induction one and works perfectly fine. It looks really nice, in my opinion and I like the design.
